If you go to B and H Photo in Manhattan, you can park for free for an hour if you buy $100 worth of stuff. I think two hours for $200. Just thought I mention it if you're going to B and H anyway. The parking lot is on 34th street across from their store.

Yep! NYC is one of those places where having a car REDUCES your mobility.

There are a few gems that are between $20 and $30 a day. Just have to find them.

When I visit NYC, I stay at a cousin's place on the other side of the Hudson, then take the train in. Subway to where-ever we want to go. Works well as long as it's not mid-summer with the heat and humidity.

Subways and buses are air conditioned. Maybe you picked one where it wasn't working.
