Only dead fish go with the flow...Pentax was long privately-held. That alone preserved its identity. Sure, Ricoh ate them but the companies still value their slightly offbeat characters. Pick up a Ricoh GR--film or digital--and the design/function bloodline is obvious. Daido Moriyama made the switch to digital likely because the GR design survived when a sensor replaced film. I'm guessing Pentax still beguiles for similar reasons. I left old Minolta stuff after a used SRT-101+58/1.4 that caught so many floor-level shots of my kid got upstaged by a well-used Nikon FE. Subsequent long affair with Nikon ended when I went to Fuji MILC. Again, design off the leash from a company that morphed into a chemical giant and gave a blank check to a design team that cooked up the X-Pro, X-100 and X-T lines. I accordingly "get" Pentax for its outsider cachet and ability to deliver.

I think Pentax gets into your blood because I have tried many other mirrorless cameras out there and yet I keep coming back to Pentax.

I went with Nikon for a while in the film era, but then Pentax just seemed better in digital. Hard to think of anything else, now.
