Why Ring Lights?

According to this the Neewer seems to be a good brand for ring lights. Anyone had hands on experience with the product?

I have the softbox ringlight from Neewer and it works well. Neewer has generally been pretty good, imo.

I hold a flash off camera right beside the lens, by hand, with the camera in tripod all the time to do macro plant shots. Just seemed like the thing to do. Only way really for me then I can angle the light how I like it.

well I've never used a ring light but it seems to me that it can create a similar look to shots I've seen of a beauty dish: ie highlights on the boney structures of the face. It also looks similar to clamshell lighting to me which is a classic beauty look
