Why shouldn't I use auto-mode?

Using Auto when you begin photography is not bad, but once you get comfortable behind the camera, you will want to take the training wheels off as shooting in manual mode will give you more creative license to create truly unique photographs.

No reason at all. I like to use Auto Iso in manual mode. I can choose whatever aperture and shutter speed combination I want and the camera selects the appropriate ISO. (most of the time)

my real question was a bit too long for the headline..! What I mean to ask, is if I'm not looking for DOF or need a long or short exposure time, is there a real reason for me not to use auto mode..?

Can jet pilots not call themselves pilots if they use auto! surely If you have the ability to switch to manual at any stage to get a better shot that's a all that matters

Making a big deal about what mode you use is for beginners who feel like its a badge of honor to twist that knob to "M mode" and advanced users who are insecure about themselves and want a superficial way to make themselves seem better than others.

The normal folks just use whatever setting will get the best result.

This is the truth. I used to think Manual was where it's at: now I use M, A, and S. Each has a purpose, and the type of shoot determines which one I use.
