Why use jpeg at all?

I think someone mentioned in the past that sports shooter prefer JPEG format because of the speed (FPS)

I use lightroom, but I like to shoot raw + jpeg to see previews in microsoft folder explorer automatically. Microsoft CODEC doesn't support my D7000, and Lightroom 3 doesn't stay open for a quick peek.

I use and really like lightroom. I know that others are very happy with Adobe Camera Raw (ACR).
Lightroom's Develop module is ACR, so you like ACR too. ;)

I understand they are built off of the same engines, one is a freestanding program and the other is a photoshop plugin, correct?

Agreed. Since I've got lightroom and a custom export function setup to export small jpegs for the Web, I never shoot jpeg. However, if I wanted to capture a really long action sequence, then I suppose jpeg would be the way to go. I don't think my camera has ever been in jpeg mode.

It does mine.

Plug-ins are not Adobe software.

You can't buy CS5 without Camera Raw (ACR), and you can't buy Lightroom without the Develope module (ACR).

Photoshop Lightroom was designed for photographers that had a substantial image database to manage and monitize. Lightroom is intended as a compliment to Photoshop CS, not as a replacement for CS, which is why Lightroom's primary function is database management, not image editing.

Lightroom was first released as Mac-only public Beta in January of 2006. Lightroom started shipping in February of 2007.

Note that the Lightroom 3 Develope module, uses ACR 6. Camera Raw has been around since PS7 (August 2002)

Jpeg's definitely have their advantages. I recently almost went back to shooting them, simply because I got sick of having to edit a ton of photos from sports games. If I shot them in Jpeg, I could have saved myself a ton of editing time. My solution was to make a bunch of presets in LR3 for different sports/situations, to make batch editing easier.

I will never use a .jpg file to make my final product (unless it's a family function or such), however, I will be using them soon, to shoot to an eye-fi card in the second card slot on my D7k (when I get it) so they can transfer out to my ipad, and upload directly to a hidden gallery on my smugmug. This is for a few reasons, one, to have a bigger screen to review photos on, or show to clients, and 2, as an automatic off site backup (albeit in .jpg, so it's a last resort). I'd do it with RAW files, however they take longer to transfer.

Yes, the Sony A77 has 12 fps at 24 megapixels per photo.

Not just that, but also because many who shoot for the papers need the photos out of the camera and on the way to the editor for posting on the internet as well as sending to the prints for the morning papers, almost as soon as they are taken. As a result there isn't the time for the photographer to edit the RAWs and the onsite tech sending them on will only be lightly cropping and selecting from what is on offer - in that field the JPEG provides a fast format that is also quick and easy to download/upload and work with.

my computer does not recognize raw so i just use jpeg. its fine with me.

You need to install the software that came with the camera - in there will be the RAW codec that will let your computer read the RAW files. If you've lost it most camera manufactures have the RAWs downloadable from their websites.

Your computer can recognize Raw just fine, if you download the right stuff.

But I do notice your computer can't make capital letters, for the same reason it can't recognize Raw image data files.

Don't you take a day off?
