Why use jpeg at all?

I've always shot RAW + Jpeg. Just wondering... do you still get a preview on your camera when you shoot just RAW ?

Yes - in fact each RAW taken has a JPEG photo embedded into it which is what the camera uses to make its preview image and histogram from (which is why its important when shooting RAW, to keep your in-camera editing options in neutral positions - since they will affect your histogram and preview image and thus might well affect how you adjust and shoot again if need be). The JPEG is also what will be shown as a thumbnail in the computer and what most image viewing software will show as the picture - editing software options for RAW might also read your JPEG default and use them as a starting point for settings when you first open up the RAW photo.

Thanks Overread I didn't know those facts.

32Bit vs 64Bit could be the issue. According to Canon USA site for RAW codec download reviews, most of the people rate it 1 out of 5 stars because it does not work with 64bit Windows.

I'm using 64-bit, so this very well may be the case.

I installed the codec pack previously, and it didn't help.

I have 64bit as well, working flawlessly... So it can't be the case............... Computer isn't some voodoo, it has strict rules. Have you even read what I've written?
Your error message implies you was trying to open the files in something else than just viewing thumbs in windows explorer.

Yes you do. But when you put the picture on the computer, it won't be ready to share or show others. And RAW images are much bigger files. I shoot RAW. But I am prepared that to spend the time I need to make adjustments and corrections before saving it to jpeg. RAW images are quite flat and needs to be prepped before it can be made into a jpeg

I think this is the problem.

- The Codec pack from Microsoft do not support Canon 60D RAW since 60D is not on the support list while 50D, 5Dmk2 or 7D .... are.

Microsoft Codec pack support list:
Canon: EOS 1000D (EOS Kiss F in Japan and the EOS Rebel XS in North America), EOS 10D, EOS 1D Mk2, EOS 1D Mk3, EOS 1D Mk4, EOS 1D Mk2 N, EOS 1Ds Mk2, EOS 1Ds Mk3, EOS 20D, EOS 300D (the Kiss Digital in Japan and the Digital Rebel in North America) , EOS 30D, EOS 350D (the Canon EOS Kiss Digital N in Japan and EOS Digital Rebel XT in North America), EOS 400D (the Kiss Digital X in Japan and the Digital Rebel XTi in North America), EOS 40D, EOS 450D (EOS Kiss X2 in Japan and the EOS Rebel XSi in North America), EOS 500D (EOS Kiss X3 in Japan and the EOS Rebel T1i in North America), EOS 550D (EOS Kiss X4 in Japan, and as the EOS Rebel T2i in North America), EOS 50D, EOS 5D, EOS 5D Mk2, EOS 7D, EOS D30, EOS D60, G2, G3, G5, G6, G9, G10, G11, Pro1, S90

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- The Codec from Canon does not work with 64bit.

System Requirements
1. Supported OS
  • Windows 7 32-bit version (64-bit version is not supported.)
  • Windows Vista (including SP1/SP2) 32-bit version (64-bit version is not supported.)
  • Windows XP SP3 32-bit version

So I think this is why it doesn't work in your 64bit Windows with EOS 60D RAW format files.

if you have a camera with 2 memory card slots (like the D7000) you can set it up (to my knowledge) to save JPEG's to one and RAW's to another, might be helpful depending on your camera :P

I DO have Canon and I DO have 64bit. Works without any problem.

Concerning the second issue (not stated in support list), several sources confirm that it actually WORKS with 60D too, for instance

My last post in here, cause obviously no one cares. I guess you're the ones who work in IT and do business in the field. Good luck.http://60dpro.com/news/microsoft-camera-codec-pack-open-canon-raw-files-in-windows-7/
