Why use jpeg at all?

But I do notice your computer can't make capital letters, for the same reason it can't recognize Raw image data files.

Don't you take a day off?

Yes......... every day. That's why he posts so much.

Only shoot JPEG because Canon's RAW format isn't compatible with Windows Explorer (even with the RAW compatibility pack), and I prefer to sort through my photos quickly that way since Canon's Digital Photo Professional is crazy slow.

TheBiles - odd my 7D and 400D RAWs are compatible with my Windows Explorer without problems - even Windows Picture Viewer (though one has to wait an age for that thing to load the full photo and not just the softer pre-rendering - can be a shock when every photo seems soft all of a sudden ;)).

Lightroom's Develop module is ACR, so you like ACR too. ;)

I understand they are built off of the same engines, one is a freestanding program and the other is a photoshop plugin, correct?
Plug-ins are not Adobe software.

You can't buy CS5 without Camera Raw (ACR), and you can't buy Lightroom without the Develope module (ACR).

Photoshop Lightroom was designed for photographers that had a substantial image database to manage and monitize. Lightroom is intended as a compliment to Photoshop CS, not as a replacement for CS, which is why Lightroom's primary function is database management, not image editing.

Lightroom was first released as Mac-only public Beta in January of 2006. Lightroom started shipping in February of 2007.

Note that the Lightroom 3 Develope module, uses ACR 6. Camera Raw has been around since PS7 (August 2002)

On Windows 7? I get the "this file is not compatible" message and it doesn't generate thumbnails.

hmm I'm running vista so 7 might be a little behind with updates, but the 60D has been out for ages now and I would expect it to be fully compatible without problems. Try checking that you've got all the latest codecs and such like all updated.

I can't view RAW files in windows 7 either. I just use NX2 or Bridge

Then you're doing something wrong, because it works for everyone I know, on my both Vista and Win7 computers, obviously it helped two guys in that thread as well etc...
Where EXACTLY did you get that message "this file is not compatible"? Maybe you're trying to open it in some not compatible viewer?

Dao, sorry, that's bull.... I have 64bit windows everywhere and no issues at all :) 64bit OS isn't a problem since 2006...

I've always shot RAW + Jpeg. Just wondering... do you still get a preview on your camera when you shoot just RAW ?

Yes - in fact each RAW taken has a JPEG photo embedded into it which is what the camera uses to make its preview image and histogram from (which is why its important when shooting RAW, to keep your in-camera editing options in neutral positions - since they will affect your histogram and preview image and thus might well affect how you adjust and shoot again if need be). The JPEG is also what will be shown as a thumbnail in the computer and what most image viewing software will show as the picture - editing software options for RAW might also read your JPEG default and use them as a starting point for settings when you first open up the RAW photo.
