A few of my favourites from this winter in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. It's the easternmost city in North America, closer to Rome, Italy, than to Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. It's quite small - 106,000 City (208,000 Metro) - but claims to be the oldest city in North America. It's probably not, but in any event it's old enough to be far more urban than its population suggests.
It has a foggy, indoor culture. Pubs and bars are everywhere. The accents are strong - mostly Irish with hints of English and generic North American. Music is the lifeblood of the place - you'll hear it wafting from every door and window. It's as omnipresent as the click and shuffle of high heels on the steep hills and the wailing of the fog horns at Cape Spear.
This VICE article sums it all up well.
And, set to a local song... (by the way, the photos are in chronological order - lol. Winter tends to start and stop here; we hover around freezing for most of it).
