Mostly friction, but there is a small really thin tab on the bottom piece that slides between the back of the phone and the top piece that also holds it together. I had another wood case from the same place and I never had it slide apart.

I bought one of these a few months ago. It had felt on the inside. Nice, but it just slid in from the top. No lid. It didn't hold my interest long...
