I was about to through this log in the fireplace when I noted the odd growth pastern. I trimed the rough end on my band-saw to get a clean cut to photograph.

Its a shame its split. A varnished slab would make a beautiful stool

Interesting find, Ron! Do you think it was because of prevailing winds, or other reason? And I'm with Rick - maybe that crack doesn't go up too deep - it would make for a neat piece of wood furniture or at least a wood sculpture. We have a black walnut in our back yard, and the ice storm of 1998 brought down some limbs, which local woodcarvers (we donated the wood to them) made into wonderful pieces on their turning lathes.

This was part of an Elm limb, only about 5" in diameter.

I have used wood from our trees for small items in the past. Here is an example of using small sections of wood.

If it's that small, you should cut them up into 1/4-1/2" slabs and make some drink coasters. A thick enough finish, like a thick polyurathane or something would probably keep crack glued together. That's definitely interesting!
