That's a Northern Flicker; cool shot!

They've been tough for me to get really good pictures of, they're pretty flighty, kind of like the pileated woodpeckers are. I finally got a decent shot of one about a month ago, after having tried dozens of times.

You know your birds. Bird photography is hard for sure. It's like you have to be ready be fast and steady all at the same time. Thanks you for the compliment coming from you with your experience it means a lot.

Stunning capture.

Wow thanks, I appreciate it.

Nice job, DarkShadow, looks like you are starting to get the hang of it!

Thanks to all you guys, the critique has helped a great deal. Also the proper tools and not trying to over reach beyond the lens capability.I also think switching over to full time raw has helped a great deal as there is so much room to adjust and detail that remains.Nothing wrong with jpeg but IMO raw rocks and is the way to go.

I have never seen -- nor could I imagine in my wildest dreams -- a stranger combination of colors and patterns all on a single bird.

Thanks for the great shot and sharing it with us!

Kevin

LOL! Your welcome.

There cool birds, I have loads of them here that feed on my feeders daily. (Southern Pa) Very skidish tho

As soon as on locked on him I took the shot and he flew away before I even took my eye off the view finder.

Yep, they fly every time here when they hear the sound of the shutter.
