Yes, I was directly under the tree much closer. This lens at f/6.3 600mm is a bit soft to begin with and cropping doesn't help.

Consider hanging up a suet basket.
We get tons of woodpeckers of various species. They typically will land on the tree and scope out things before landing on the suet. You can get lots of chances of capturing them either on the tree or the basket.
