Would you call it spam?

LOL, I'm pretty sure I know who you're talking about.

I guess you could call it spam. I think the end goal is to generate traffic on a blog.

I never really got that... Do you make money by having a blog? Why is it so important to get as many views as possible?
I think I know who he's talking about too. Does this user's name start with a W and end with an A? :sexywink:

It starts with a W but finishes with ANCHOR ;)

My definition of spam is "unwanted mail or messages".

I would not consider this spam if it it were on a photo Q&A type board/forum.

Now if he/she were posting a camera/photography question on a cooking board or a woodworking board or maybe a gaming board... Well that IS spam.

Honestly, W and end with A, doesn't ring a bell.

I wonder if the various forum managements would also consider it spam?

A blog that gets 50,000 visits a day could make some nice pocket change from some advertising.

The sole purpose of this person is to have you click on the link to their site. They never post photos on the forum and share in others. Their older op's are always deleted leaving the most recent. When requested to post they beat around the sudject to leave for a few days after being chewed up then come back as if nothing happens just to do it again. Their titles are bold and contain sexual context only to disappoint unless you click. Thats not spam? Maybe not, but definately deceptive imo.

Yeah, W & A aren't ringing any bells for me either - unless you just meant Wise-Ass...

I'm not going to say who I'm thinking of, but the person I am thinking of basically only re-posts content from their blog (and it actually is helpful stuff a lot of the time) and links back to it. If that sounds familiar to you, we're probably thinking of the same person.

W-anchor....it's more of a UK expression, as in wa---ank--er...are bells ringing now???

Yeah, I got that... :er:

I've never heard someone describe '****er' as beginning with a 'W' and ending with an 'A'. Maybe 'Last letter' is code for 'second letter'.

And I wouldn't expect a UK slang term from someone living just a few (well, more like 50) miles from me in Texas. (Which is where the person who originally mentioned the W/A thing lives.)

LOL

W A N K gets censored... ****

I just used ANCHOR as not to upset too many people

Gary, your tact and sensitivity is muchly appreciated...wouldn't want to upset those with delicate sensibilities!

Nope, different person.

Like you say, the blog you're referring to usually has helpful, useful photography information, which to me disqualifies those posts as being spam.

I don't really get what spam is but based on the Op's scenario of what this person is doing, its what I call self-centered.

What do you think about someone that copy and pastes the same exact question on 5 or 6 different photography forums, but never partisipates in anyone else's threads (ie, not a contributing member), often never acknowledge the replies they get, and has a couple of photography business links in their signature.

Would you call that spamming?

It is some form of spamming. They aim to get as many backlinks as possible on forums and blogs. Google checks for backlinks as a criteria of ranking.
You can find tons of such posts on yahoo answers as well.
Its one of the steps in Seacrh Engine Optimization.

Link quality is a factor is SEO that the search engine have quantified in their algorithms.

Posts in forums don't constitute quality backlinks to search engines, thankfully.

Well actually if it is a forum that has a high page rank it does help.
Especially in .gov .edu domains.
