WTB: Affordable replacement for broken 18-55mm on Nikon D40

Who is "they"... I've actually done some research. Seems like you can buy the mounting bracket for around $16 plus SH. The question is... can I replace it without doing any further damage to the lens?

sorry . by "they" i was referring to people who fix cameras and lenses and whatnot

Received a Nikor 55-200mm VR yesterday... am getting a replacement bracket for my 18-55mm for $16 and will attempt a field surgery to repair.
