I went out specifically looking for this species this morning and thought I would share one of our lesser known toos with the bird people here. Although the finding part was easy, I was unhappy with how close I was able to get. For the entire time I was there they were feeding in the tops of pine trees. Ahh well another day. Here was the best of the bunch.

I would have loved a close up of this dude.. Nice bird, maybe you should've tried to up the ISO if the shutter speed was low enough. Lovely bird. :)

Bit underexposed you reckon? I always struggle with black/white animals. Just would have liked to be closer.

Details were f5.6 1/1250 and ISO 640. Manual mode.

Ah! This one looks so so much better. The colours weren't even visible in the earlier version.

The problem with the shot is you are shooting at too high a shutter speed for the light. You could easily have shot this at 1/320th or even 1/250th of a sec and I bet it would have been pretty decent, and you could have lowered the ISO as well. Having said that I think you did a real nice job with this one, I love this shot and all the greenery around it. Would love to see more of these if you have them.

Yeah sorry I had uploaded the wrong one before :)

Ahh I am not steady of hand though. with a 300mm lens 320th just isn't fast enough for me. It was also windy so these branches were moving and I had to crop so a few things that factored into the shutter speed. You are right though, I could have lowered it a bit :) I was hoping he would take flight! (and he did, but my focusing skills were not fast enough).

What a gorgeous bird, Daniel! Birds are frustrating critters though, aren't they? Won't hold still, won't pause in flight, always hiding behind a branch or getting themselves right in front of the sun. But what really gets me is -- they're bird brains, right? -- so how do they know to fly away as soon as I take the lens cap off? Lee

They are magic Dan. That is one tough shot when they are among all the branches like that, I'm surprised you managed to get any shot. Well done and they are stunning. Nice to see it munching away as well.

All the best Dan and good going.

Danny.
