I'm going about this backwards - I've already posted, but haven't introduced myself yet.

My name is Brian, I'm 34, married for 11 years and have an 8 month old daughter. I've always been interested in photography and the "big cameras". I worked on yearbook all through high school and college so was always taking pictures of something. My cousin had an SLR camera and I remember messing around with it, having no idea what I was doing, and got some pretty good shots - looking back now, I probably had it on auto or something!

My wife and I bought a Canon Rebel film - only used the auto setting, sort of took a photography class - didn't really teach us anything we didn't already know. Then the digital age hit - we sold the film camera and opted for the Canon Rebel XTi - do we know how to use all the cool settings on it? Not really.

So, I'm hoping to change that. I love taking pictures actually. I see the shots in my head and try to transfer to film, but never can quite "get them" I guess you could say. I've inherited two cameras from my wife's grandfather that I'm having fun figuring out as well and that's kind of sparked my interest back into photography. I don't mean this as any offense to any who is doing this at all - I don't want to take pictures for anyone, or do weddings, or anything like that - I don't want to start my own business with it. In the last month or two in my community alone, I 've see 2 or 3 new fan pages pop up on facebook for people that are doing this - all because they can use the auto setting on their big camera and use picnik! I just want the pictures to be for me!

Okay, so my intro turned into more of a rant than an introduction! Ha! Hope to get to know a lot of you here and get some great tips!

And for the record....I do know what the "big camera" actually is! Ha!

Welcome to the forum.

So what is the 'big camera'?

I was referring to a SLR - maybe not as common to others as I thought! Ha! I've heard other people say it - "I need to get me a big camera so I can take good pictures!" My attempt at humor didn't go over so well I suppose! ha!

Well, to most of us, the Rebels are small cameras. ;)

Man what kind of photography class was that? Doesn't seem like a very great one if it didn't teach you all the ins and outs of the equipment you're using, because it most certainly should have.
That being said, honestly I feel the best way is to read the manual. Yes, it may seem boring but if it's a good manual you WILL learn all the good stuff instead of just full auto.

Welcome, I look forward to seeing your work. :D

it was pretty basic really - I mean it explained what shutter and aperture, but outside of that it wasn't much. And I guess some would say - if you know what those are then you'd know how to do what you need to do. Well, I guess I'm kinda in that boat. I know what they are and I know how they "should react" I suppose - it's just getting what I want, I guess. And I"m sure that just comes with practice - something I need to do a lot of!

Thanks for the welcome everyone - and yeah, I'm sure the Canons are "little" in regards to some other cameras. Ultimately, I would like I medium or large format camera. The photographer at our wedding used one and I loved the pictures he got with it - since then I've wanted one - of course I need to learn a lot before tackling one of those!

A Canon Rebel? ....a big camera

Well, I was really referring to simply the SLR cameras as opposed to a (smaller) point-shoot camera. Having a camera like that with inter-changeable lenses , especially when I was a kid was a big deal! Ha! It's something I sometimes here people say - maybe only something I've heard though!
