Youth League Games

I am doing video for a youth league game. We are using a Canon GL2 in the stands, then I am using a 60D on the field / sidelines. One of the great things about the 60D is the ability to shoot pictures and video at the same time, so I have been able to surprise the client with a few pics. Here are some samples, CC very much appreciated as this is my first foray into really doing any type of photography outside of band work (the client's son is #10)

I would choose video or stills, but not both at the same time. If I was a client looking at these images I would be disappointed. They are flat, shutter speed was too slow to stop the action, 200th at f14? To stop football action, 500th-and faster, shutter speed, between f5.6-8. If the spectators are in focus, or the entire background is in focus, there is no separation from the players and background at f14.

The problem with tools that do many things is they generally don't do any of them really well. As Imagemaker said, shoot still, or shoot video but both doesn't seem to be working out too well.

What lens are you using for your stills? Especially for the younger ones I stry to stay around F3.5 or 4. Besides isolating the subject it keeps ugly back grounds out of focus (outhouses) :sexywink:

. The smaller kids play in the best stadiums don't they?? lol Also watch your straightness. 3,4,and 5 aren't straight.

I'm by no means an pro but I do think my pics have come along in the last couple yrs, so I'll share the advise that was given to me. I'm using a 70-200 staying in front of the team that I'm shooting. I don't waste much time shooting action on the other side because I don't have the reach with my lens for the following: Shoot low (i'm usually on my butt or knees), have to see the eyes, fill the frame with the subject, Either have the ball in the picture or a couple kids in the shot that tell a story (perfect for linemen and tackle shots). Obviously this is just a guide I go by but it has helped me a lot. If you're focusing on just one or two kids I bet you'll come out with some fantastic shots.
