You've all been cheating, and I have evidence to prove it (flash photography)

I finally decided to face my fears with flash photography. I was scared of it in the past because I am still very much learning photography in general. I ordered a YN565ex from Amazon and got it a couple days ago. Tonight was my first real shooting with it outside of testing manual and TTL modes in my house. As a side note - extremely impressed with the build quality of this flash and I'm happy I ordered it instead of the SB900.

Anyways... I'm a cheater now too :lmao:. That ambient light stuff is for the birds because now I can control the light! I'm blown away at what even just a fill flash can do. I'm waiting on my stand and umbrella, diffuser, and snoot to come in next week!

This is a boring shot, but I could have never produced this look on something so boring with just ambient light! Even a fill flash just makes stuff pop in the photo:

Here's my 1st real attempt at using the flash beyond a fill. I bounced off a wall camera left. I have much to learn, but I'm just blown away at what doors are opening with this:

Yes it is amazing isn't it. I have 2 flashes and a SU800 controller. The SU800 controller is pretty neat as I manually control the output on the flashes. One flash can be at 1/128 and the other at 1/32, etc

I was impressed when I saw this video of a SU800 when I was looking at those radio triggers
But other than the SU800 I liked how the video reviewed adjusting lighting. And there's ton on YouTube for learning.

Sooner or later I'll get some a 3rd flash, umbrellas, softboxes, and radio triggers. Probably Yongnuo stuff.
But I also made a cheap product white box from white poster board and It's amazing just testing objects on it how it's just an object floating there and I removed all shadows.

its a wonderful feeling isn't it? not being totally reliant on whatever light just happens to be available at the time? :mrgreen:

when you go to get the flashes off camera, I recommend the yongnuo radio triggers. i recently picked up 4 of them. they work great and support TTL.
$80 a pair compared to the bloated pocket wizards at $400 a pair.

The first off-camera flash shot I took was nothing short of a revelation for me. I genuinely feel sorry for people who think they enjoy photography but haven't explored this aspect of it.

I'm glad to hear more good opinions on the YG triggers. I was really feeling sick knowing I was dreading having to dump so much just for the pocket wizards. I'm going to ordewr these now for sure!

Do it! The only flaw I can see with it is the recharge time MAYBE if I were a wedding photographer. But I'm not, and out of 4 hours of shooting last night I only had to wait for a recharge 2 or 3 times. A few times it never did flash even when I know it was ready, but I'm pretty sure that was because of TTL at those times. I never had it happen while firing manual.

I thought I was excited about the flash coming in but now I'm going crazy waiting on my stand kit to come in. I can already see what it's going to allow me to do.

I use the yongnuo triggers on my sb24's, sb600 sb700, and YN568EX.
AND...the TTL function works on all of them using the yongnuo triggers.
just make sure you get the model that goes to your camera.
