Zoom Effect

I did this last month:

does this hurt your lense ?....zooming so fast during exposure?...or are we doing it slowly?...what shutter speed do we use?

Mine was about 4 seconds at f/8. I just held it for 2 seconds at 18mm and than eased it along to 35mm and tried to time it to where the shutter closed right when i hit the end of my zoom range, or really close.
