Nikon equivalent lenses

Just got a D40, i know of the Nikon branded Nikkor lenses F-mounts only. Ive heard a couple other brands fly by, but what other brands exactly will Nikon F-mounts support? Brands and models?

Any lens with a Nikon F-mount should work from third party lens makers like Sigma, Tamron, Tokina, etc. Some lenses will only work with certain functions, so you'll have to read into that for the individual lens itself.

I like my Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 with the built-in motor (make sure you get the one with the motor for the D40). The only things I don't like are that it's bigger than a fixed lens (like the nifty-fifty), it makes weird noises and is a little louder than the kit lens, and that it is a DX lens so there is vignetting at the extreme settings on my N70 (film camera). If you're willing to go a little longer, the Tamron 28-70 f/2.8 (again get the one with the motor) is not a DX lens so it'll work on full frame cameras that work with G lenses.
