Will this speedlight work with my new Nikon D7000 camera? Are there any disadvantages of using this vs a new flash? What do you gain by using an attached light over the light that is in the D7000?

It will work. No Ttl metering and it will be a manual flash with no af assist light in dark situations. . It's kinda big too. I have one but I use it off camera. Bouncing flash makes the light source larger and softer. Much nicer than direct pop up flash. They are nice but for a similar price, you may want to consider the sb28. Recycles quicker, smaller, and has the same power output.
