Question on Lens Compatability

Right now I have a Canon Digital Rebel XT 350D. This summer, I plan on starting to purchase much higher-quality lenses than I have at the moment.

My issue is that in a few years (around 2010), I plan on upgrading the camera body to a more professional level, and I want it to have a smaller crop factor (this 1.6x is killing me on wide-angle shots).

So my question is: What kind of compatability is there where if I buy a Canon or Sigma lens for my 350D, would I be able to use is on more professional level Canon bodies in the future?

In the short term I wouldn't worry, though personally I don't think I could guarantee 100% that any company will be using the same lens mounts by 2010, or if they are whether current lenses will need modifying, rechipping etc. But like I said, that could happen with any company and Canon is as safe a choice as you'll find. Basically what I'm saying is that I don't think there are any guarantees, but what's the alternative? Don't buy any more lenses until 2010?
