Two shots

I'm new and i'm just looking for some opinions on these two pictures.

Location is Venice Beach in Los Angeles , California.

I like the first much better than the second one with the lens flare. I see areas in the photo that I would have persued differently. One to the left for sure, with a totally different compo. To me, usually less is more. I'm sending an example of what I would have pursued. It is only for reference, but hack on it if you choose. It is a low res. shot that I took at Myrtle Beach. I have a much larger version. It's really one of my favorite photos.

I am not seeing a strong focus here. The lighting and graffiti structure are interesting, but the the frame is a little "snapshotish".
