The 18-200 was my first lens. I still like it for a travel lens when I don't want to carry much. That said, if I were doing paying work, or something I was "serious" about, it wouldn't be my first choice.
Others have mentioned the Tamron 28-75, and I'll second that. It's on my short list of next lenses to get and it suits your purposes much better than the 18-200. It's less money than the 18-200 and it'll take much better shots in its lesser zoom range. Look it up and read the reviews. I think you'll be a lot happier with it than the 18-200 for what you're doing.
