Is there a reason it needs to be a known distance? Some people have huge melons, others do not. Whatever works, works, right?
set up your subject and move your tripod accordingly, then measure the distance if you still care.

I'm considering buying one and I simply wondered if anyone could give a general distance. Yes I know head sizes vary. Its a matter of choosing between 85 and 105 and I've heard 85 is a tad short for face only shots.

Go to your local camera shop and throw both lenses on your camera. The staff will most likely give you some good input as well.
