17 Year-Old Really Smart Kid

I had to take some portraits for a profile of this student who had a neuroscience internship at NASA last year. I think he's like 17 and already has his Associate's Degree and is majoring in biochemistry.

I know they're pretty generic, but it was kind of on-the-fly and the editor wanted them like that.

These Macs that I'm working on don't have their brightness and color calibrated either, so I'm having a hard time figuring out if they're too bright, or too magenta, or the colors are too cold.

Somehow, just by the title, I knew this wasn't going to be a self-portrait!

Wow, that shirt sure gives a bad,bad moire effect!

I think shot #2 is an excellent portrait! A very well-done pose! This photograph would look great in an article in Esquire or GQ. Of course, they would probably work on lightening up the inner leg area on those jeans...the dark patches there are distracting, since they stand out from the rest of the pants....but the rest of the shot, all the aspects of it....background, his stance and pose and eye direction, the camera placement, background control....all very good! Props!

Yeah the shirt does have a lot of moire going on. In the full resolution image it's not as bad but the farther down it's resized the worse it gets. I would have told him to change it but it was kind of on a "hey I'm here and I have class in 20 minutes so let's do this" basis.

Yeah, the vertical nature of a lot of our architecture really does lend itself well to nice visual elements and backgrounds, and this time I was actually able to make it work (I think...lol). Usually I get so anxious about getting it done in a timely manner that I end up producing some sub-par stuff.

The architectural elements in the photo are utilized to superb effect. Really,rreally,rrrrrreally pleasing placement of a standing male figure in front of those patterns of architectural detail. Outstanding.
