i see mint VR 1 going for 1400-1500 in CANADA. so i think fair price in the states should be around 1200-1400. i think you got shafted.

FYI: for around $900-1000 you can get a 80-200mm f2.8 AF-S, which is arguably a better lens optically--just doesn't have the VR.
