230$ New lens? Help!

So im getting a new lens..only got 230-250 to spend.. not looking for any pro lens just something that works as im just getting the hang of this photography thing

18-105 vr -190 with hood
18-70 3.5-4.5 IF -230 with hood and uv filter

any other suggestions? looking to buy used

If your going used, look for a 35 f1.8 & 50 f1.8. You should be able to pick up both, will come in very handy and as long as you dont mind walking around you may not need anything more than these two.

I assume we are talking Nikon here but you really should post what camera you have and what you like to shoot.

If it is the 18-70mm Nikon lens then I have it and it is pretty good with well lit subjects. One of the better built Nikon kit lens IMHO. $230 sounds little high for a used copy . I have seen them go as low as $130.

What are you looking to take pictures of? You already have a 50 f1.8 so...do you need a wider field of view? Do you want to take pictures of things at a distance? Macro and close up photography? nikon 24/28 f2.8, 28 f2 ais(manual focus), 35 f1.8 or 35 f2. tamron 90mm f2.8 macro? What are you taking pictures of will help us, help you!

i have a d90 and a 50mm already

and im not -too- sure what i want to shoot yet thats why im just looking for a simple zoom lens i like wide angle...18 is just fine for me though..and i want a little zoom...nothing telephoto yet though just to see what im interested in more like i said im still finding what i like...so im just looking for a cheaper used lens to help me

Then you should ask yourself 'what can't the lens a I have now do for me?" "where do I take most of my pictures?" "what are the subjects in MOst my pictures?" Once you answer these for yourself you'll have a better understanding of what you need, and then you can start looking for the lens you need in your price range that fits that criteria.

Well for your price range. I think if you were watchful. You could fill out your lens assortment with 2 lenses. 18-55 VR and 55-200VR (refurbished or used). I know you say you don't feel a need for the longer zoom. But since your not really set on what to get. Both are very decent lenses. And both together are in your price range. Even though I have very good fast Nikon lenses. I carry 18-55 and 55-200 VR's in my travel bag when I am gone for my normal job. They are light, easy to carry around. And perform pretty well. Buying them used or refurbished, you not out as much money and can probably get most back if and when you decide to trade up to something differet. When you know what you really want.

Can get refurbished lenses off Nikon's own store (more pricey), Adorama, or on Ebay. I have purchases about 5 refurbished items on eBay with Cameta Camera (very reputable). There is also www.keh.com. They are very reputable and have a large selection. And they can be trusted with used gear descriptions. Just looked at KEH and for both lenses it would be about $260 deppending on which ones you picked (used).

sigma 18-50 os 2.8 for 200?

i honestly know im not into sports or wildlife ..so no need for a telephoto...18 is wide enough for me....

honestly this sounds picky....but i have ocd and the nikon 18-55 i just dont like at all for some odd reason..its just the look and size lol

i can get that sigma brand new for 200

The Sigma 18-50 OS f/2.8-4.5 according to Lenstip.com fares better in tests than the Nikon kit lens. It is 1/3 to 2/3 stop faster as well. Just dont confuse the specs with the Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 OS. But for the money it appears to be a decent buy.

If you sell your 18-70mm you should have enough to buy a used Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 AF, which sell for around $300 on ebay. The older "AF" versions without vibration control "VC" actually perform a little better then the newer ones, and are cheaper as well.

The 19-35 is soft as soap, wide-end due to CA but 'sharp' IMO for digital B&W.
