300D new lens problem

I recently bought a tamron 70 - 300 second hand for my 300D.

It seems old, and can switch to macro at 300 zoom only.
The prob is, every time I set the aparature anything above the minimum (5.0) i get error 99

Error 99 is apparently the unknown error code...so...what should I do?!

This has been a reported problems with the 300D and non-canon lenses.

Did you buy the Tamron new?

From what I have heard, third party manufacturers (Tamron & Sigma) have been helpful and offer to upgrade the chip in the lens.

Check it out. If that is a no go...you may have to trade it in for a Canon lens.

Have you tried setting everything to manual arty? If it's a chip thing, maybe if the chip has nothing too taxing to do it won't die on you.

Propably the contacts crapped out. It's the weakest part of the lenses these days.

Or about 1000000 other reasons.

So...take it back? if so that means im lens less for this photography event I need it for...damnit!
