I somehow uploaded the smaller "thumbnail" image. Here's a second attempt at the larger file. Same crop, also cloned the bits from the foreground (could probably do a better job at it but I'm tired) and this time I left the colors alone but just bumped the contrast a tiny bit:

As for the second one, I'm not sure what you think is wrong. I think it's a nice picture, but the colors were too saturated for me. I know this isn't everyone's tastes but I desaturated the colors and contrast a bit, brought up some of the shadows. The trunks of the trees are still too black for me, but I've hit my current processing wall - perhaps not in skill but in tolerance - so I'm calling it done:

Look, I'm kind of with you on the goal of getting SOOC as close as possible to how I like it. My post processing is minimal but I do recognize that sometimes the camera isn't enough. My boyfriend got a photo book for Christmas. It shows the proof sheets of a lot of famous shots and photographers. Some of them are incredibly accurate, though certainly there was some cropping, dodging and burning happening in the darkroom. Others really didn't have that high of a hit rate, but the ones they did get right had little processing (I'm sure there was still some editing, though.)

(I don't say sadness as a bad thing, by the way. We Portuguese think of sadness as a good thing. We've got one of the famous "untranslatable" terms: saudade. It roughly translates to 'nostalgia' but it also includes the idea that there's a peacefulness to be found in sadness.)
