I shot this last night of Army Landing Craft at 3rd Port. I think the starbursts around the lights are cool but I would like to know how to eliminate them in the first place.

Nice image. I think perhaps just a little over-exposed in the light areas. With respect to your question of the 'starbursts', there's very little you can do to eliminate them in this sort of situation. Better quality (Read: "EXPENSIVE") lenses may help to reduce it, but that's as good as you will get. What I usually do is use a 6pt cross-screen filter, so that it's clear they're there deliberately.

I shot that about 20 times with settings ranging from F5.6 to F20 and shutter speeds for 30 seconds to 3 minutes. This one really looked like it portrayed the subject best out of all of them.

Tonight I plan on going out and taking pics up close and personal of the boats.
