52mm to 58mm step up adapter????

Is there any disadvantage to using a 52 mm filter on a 58mm lens with using a step up adapter. DOes it do something to the image? Does it cut some off?

i would think it would cause vignetting at the edges of the photo, but you could always crop it i guess...
