85mm 1.4 or 1.8?

Have you looked at the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 and compared that to the Nikon? From my Canon experiences, it's better than the 85mm f/1.2L (Focuses faster, sharper at f/1.4). I am really happy with the lens, and it produces some really nice bokeh. Not trying to gum up your decision making, just suggesting other options! Here, I'll post a few photos showcasing how the bokeh is rendered. Most of them are f/1.4 or f/2, all shot on a FX camera.

What?? This is good bokeh? Okay, apparently I have NO eye whatsoever for this type of thing. I find this bokeh to be extremely distracting. It looks like the background is warping in on itself.

That was Derrel's point in post #15 above.

I have the 1.8 and I seem to recall it was either Zach arias or Chase Jarvis earlier this fall that got rid of the 1.4 and kept the 1.8 because he said the image difference wasn't worth the price difference. Which is moot since one of them switched to entirely Canon now anyways. I wish I could find that reference but it was on twitter. I really like my 1.8. I honestly don't think an 1100 difference for that 0.4 is worth it. I have played with the 1.4 but can use that money elsewhere. Just my 2 cents.

Not a $1100 dollar price difference when bought used. I found a mint, late serial number, 85 f1.4 af-d for $800. Still a $500 dollar difference though.

Trying to find some outdoor pics with bright OOF specular highlights off-center frame. Also showing a non "warped" background.

There's a few in the top left corner. Still circular. Shot at F2.

No warping of the background. Shot at f1.4

Shot at f2.8. Still circular.

Not the greatest photos. Just howing the OOF plane not warped and OOF highlights still circular.

Admittedly, this isn't the best 'bokeh' in the world. But at same time if you knew about bokeh, then you would know that this is one of the most difficult backgrounds to render well. It is an extremely busy background and the lens does a decent job on separating the subject from the background.

Well, you also prefer the bokeh of kit lenses. So I'll take that into consideration.

Some people already suggested Sigma 85mm f1.4 as an alternative. I would agree. Did a lot of research online and finally purchased the Sigma lens just recently. Based on my limited experience so far, I have to say that it is a great lens that produces amazing photos. Regardless, if you have the money, go with f1.4, Nikon or Sigma.
