This is a picture from my neices 9th birthday yesterday. I'm pretty pleased with the way it turned out. C&C welcome

I think I'd like it better if everything wasn't so centered, honestly. The composition just feels too.... squished to me. I think that's what I feel, anyway, haha.

Maybe if she were just a little more to the right of the cake, and you had composed it so that the cake didn't fall so close to being right under her chin, it would have given the image a little more room to breath, if that makes sense.

I agree, I had my camera on a tripod on the table(small kitchen) b/c I wanted to attempt a cool photo with the lights off and the candles going(which didnt turn out:thumbdown So we were in close quarters.

You probably can't duplicate the shot now, but for next time, don't be afraid to offer some "direction" to the subjects. IOW: pose the birthday girl more "even" with the cake so as to get them both in focus, and then ask the guest to pose just off one shoulder to create a "triangle" of two people and the cake so they won't appear so "stacked" in the shot. Use bounce flash so you won't have to open up the aperture so much.

In response to getting the cake and your neice on the same plain... I actually don't mind that the cake is out of focus. Maybe if it were just a HAIR more in focus (close down your aperture a hair), so you could make out the candles SLIGHTLY better... then it does just fine conveying that it's a birthday cake, but keeping the focus on your niece, which is what the image is really about......... the birthday cake.

So you have your niece in the spotlight, with just enough of the cake identifiable to tell a story. :sillysmi:

I do agree with the composition being slightly off, but as a candid shot I think it's great! It has a nice photojournalistic quality to it.

I don't care for your processing... way too yellow IMO! You also have some hotspots on the cheeks / forehead of the subject.. minor, but still there.
