A couple of my photos for cc

Hi! Thank you all for the tips. I went out today and practiced more! I can't wait to upgrade camera's but for now I want to get use to it and learn more about the technicalities before I invest in a better piece of equipment. The children are my niece's and nephew's and I do love them so of course every photo they are in I think 'awe they are so cute' lol. But I don't know how to find other subjects. I have gone to the park to practice on things like tree's, flowers, structures etc, but I also want to practice on people so where can I find more subjects?

I took everyone's suggestions when I was out today too, so we'll see if I learned anything or improved at all. Thanks again for taking the time to view and give tips.

Finding people is definitely tough. Have you checked if there are any photography meetups in your local area? I found two awesome groups near me and we do shoots together. One group is more informal and we go out to various locations and just photograph. I've gotten pictures of strangers at those times because people are much more open to having their pic taken if you are in a group of photography enthusiasts (as opposed to creepy lone person with a camera LOL). The other group actually is for photographers as well as amateur models -- with members that are amateur photographers as well as amateur models, all wanting to come together and practice, the sky's the limit on subjects. If you don't find a group, maybe you could start one. You can also always ask friends to pose for you. It doesn't have to be strangers ... I just thought those were your children and, well, most of us can't be objective about our kids, can we? : )

I am a newb as well, but I like the images. You can clearly see the sun on #2's face, so that's EXACTLY why he's squinting. I think it's a cute pic that his girlfriends won't want to see when he's older! I LOVE the fact that the third pic is tilted. It gives it a unique quality and feel. Not everything has to be square and perfect.

Thanks burdock :) I went back to that bridge and took perfectly straight pics (well tried) and I hate them, I don't know why but they look so .. I don't know.. just non-interesting I guess. I think I naturally tilt, but I am trying not to do it so much just to compare the differences and see. Leftplayer, thanks for the advice! I am going to look into local groups and maybe take a class at the local CC, I'm sure that will bring me further into the photography community and help me find more subjects.

A good, and pretty much required, place to start is by googling "exposure triangle". Also go to the library or Amazon and get a copy of "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson. Both of these will get you a good ways down the road of understanding the mechanics of photography. I applaud your decision to learn first and upgrade second. A lot can be learned with a P&S, and it makes the transition to an SLR much easier.
