Heres some photos from my two previous photo sessions.

This one is of my friend's son. I'll admit, it was a challenge. He never wanted to cooperate, as you all may know. I like this shot because of what he was doing while I took the picture. He thought it was hilarious to throw the football on the ground..
1/100th f/4 ISO 400 24mm on my 18-200. 430ex II flash fired with softbox diffuser at I believe 1/64.

We went up on the top of a playground for this one. I could not get him to look, because of the other kids playing. I'm really happy with this picture for some reason. He seems to be deep in thought... at age 1 haha.
1/250th f/3.5 ISO 100 19mm with my 18-200. 430ex II flash fired with softbox diffuser.

Here's one of my friend from a shoot yesterday. I made it black and white because I felt the emotion went better with it.
1/250th f/2.8 ISO 100 50mm 1.8 lense, 430ex II flash fired with softbox diffuser at probably 1/32.

Did you run some sort of high pass filter on these?

Or an action at full opacity?

The first one there is not light in his eyes and everything looks so.... processed. Was his sweater purple?

When you say flash do you mean on camera or off?

My flash was on my camera. I started with a preset in lightroom 3 that I had, and sort of customized it from there. I just played with the levels.

#1 looks fake to me like you dropped the kid in the picture.

#1 seems a bit too processed.
I like the sharpness in the color on the ground though.

This may be difficult but I would have tried shooting from farther away/ zoomed in.
Though that may be trouble with the young ones.

#2's pretty neat
I would have liked to see what this looked like in color.
It took me a while to realize it was a playground/ playset/ jungle gym, kinda thing.
Usually they're done in yellows, blues, and browns.

And in 3 I would pay attention to the rule of thirds.
I think it becomes distracting from the subject, your friend.
And I don't mean follow the ROT with him, but with the back ground.
And maybe look into some framing techniques.

Goodstuff.
