a few from our first day out with black&white

... then there is part II = when not to meter like that ... but we will let you absorb that first.

BABY STEPS BABY STEPS !!!!!

lol

seriously though, i thank you for the advice. gonna get away from the board for a few and try to understand this part now.

neither the camera nor the manual had a big flashing neon arrow pointing to the meter or telling me that it was a must to understand before going out for the first time. and in my completely logical way of thinking.. if it's on page 50, it must not be as important as stuff on page 10 ! so i didn't bother with it yet. :)

i know that makes perfect sense... right?

i've been reading the manual. and playing with the camera. and by golly, i think i got it.

in the bottom right corner of my viewfinder, there is a little line that moves from +2 to -2 as i adjust the shutter or aperture.

so basically, i want every shot to be in the center?

if my camera is on manual, then it meters based on whatever is in the center of the viewfinder cross hairs.

so, what do i point this at. something white, or something black?

just playing here in the house, the exposure line will move based on the object i have in the center. ie: point at something black versus white.

i assume this will probably be answered in some of the links im about to read.

but, i think i'm getting it.

Way to go McGuyver!!! Your scanner does not have an illumination source on the lid--so you jerry-rigged up some white paper and glass to create a diffused lighting source from the light coming out from below!!! Resourceful man!

"Quick, hand me that paper clip and the chewing gum!"

"But, McGruber, that gum has already been chewed...ewwww!"

Boom! McGruuuuuuuuber!!!

Oh dear naptime! If it's not on page 10 it's not important. I gotta say I literally laughed out loud at that one! You and ur kiddo are truely a hoot!

For now ... yes, you want to hit the center.

Your camera should default to a "matrix" metering ... meaning it is programmed to take in consideration a large area of the frame.
So, I would say meter for your primary subject area ... then recompose if required.

We will teach you about spot metering and the Zone System tomorrow :lmao: ... OK we won't.
