A Fungus Among Us

[smoke665]

Out walking our woods today, and saw this little gem. Not sure what it is, but it was interesting.

The thing was covered with what looked like little Mayflies (I know it's only February). Most of them swarmed around me when I approached, but one brave little bugger remained (look closely)

Very nice.
Almost looks like flower pedals.

Apparently I didn't luck out and find growing True Chnaterelle, but rather the False Chanterelle Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca. The "True" grows up from the ground, False grows off rotting wood. The True is some of the very best edible mushrooms, the other mildly poisonous. Guess I won't be cooking mushrooms tonight.
