A Grand Day Afield ~ Me gunning Mate Bill is seen taking pause with a nice trio o' rooster pheasants after a particularly nice hunt we shared yesterday morn. Bill was gunning with a really nice B. Rizzini Sig over and under in .410, a really svelte, lightweight wand. The beautiful wee smoothbore features some really pretty wood and spectacular case coloring on the receiver. British Labrador gun dog ALLIE MAE trained by your's truly did an outstanding day's work in flushing the birds from cover and retrieving them to hand . Bill's gunning was spot on and the small charges of shot from the sub-gauge shotgun consistently found their mark in dropping the birds ALLIE MAE flushed for us. This hunt was Bill's first using the newly acquired Rizzini, that purchase made from a friend that was downsizing his gun collection. Another friend just purchased a B. Rizzini .410 and 28 gauge two barrels set from the same seller in mint condition, that gun featuring a coin finished false side plate and some very nicely figured wood.

Cheers,
THE DOG WHISTLER ☘️

@Irishwhistler nice one. I'm headed to the farm in MO, in November, so Sadie and I can have a little quality time in the field. Last year there weren't many birds, coyotes had decimated the quail population. I'm hoping to see a pheasant or two. They've only just recently opened a season on them after reintroducing them 30+ years ago. Even a bad day in the field is still good watching Sadie Mae work.

Interesting that N.V.M. decided to view this post after raising the objection to my initial posting of WOOD DUCKS ON THE TABLE. So "offended", they came back for more. So much for the (NSFW) disclaimer. Give me a break.

Smoke 665, enjoy ye time afield in MO. Any time we get to spend with our beloved dogs are treasured moments spent. Safe travels to ye Mate.

Slainte,

@Irishwhistler individual has been reported for trolling.

The weather here in the south has finally turned off cooler, so Sadie and I will get some short hunts here on the mountain. I bought this property to develop as a preserve. Years ago I had the state biologist visit and make recommendations. After following his plan I actually had coveys settle in. I was able to manage the population such that I could harvest enough for a meal or two a year, then the coyote moved in, and wasn't long before the birds disappeared. About 3 yrs ago we had Cougars and Panthers start appearing, we believe they were brought in to combat the coyotes. In any case the coyotes moved out, and I hope that eventually the birds will take hold again.

did i agree that simply writing "NSFW" would be the solution? do you need to post shots of your kill?

N.V. M.
I do not "need to post shots of my kill", just as you do not "need" to view my postings - (and in actuality, I did not kill the birds in this post), rather, I choose to post that which I wish to convey a story with. I have complied with the request of the administrator. You on the other hand have chosen to view what I have posted. Your choice, not mine.

Excellent composition! I wish there was better light on Bill's face.

Good frame and I like the description. I used to use a Stevens 16 ga. side-by-side when shooting on the wing. Light, fast and accurate!

Nice pic. I've never had pheasant and I almost hate to have to ask the 3rd most asked question ever (did I just start something?) …...
"does it taste like chicken?" I'm guessing it to have it's differences. I hear duck is on the greasy side and I've never had that either but would love to try it someday.

@K9Kirk I guess all taste is subjective, and it's been a number of years but as I remember it was more like the white meat of turkey. Also like turkey very easy to get to dry unless cooked properly.

Pheasant is similar to chicken and wild duck, unlike domestic duck, is not really what I would call "greasy ".

As a Young Man I discovered a couple of articles about how to hunt pheasants without a dog. I used to spend many pleasurable days a year in the early 1980s pursuing this great imported game bird with my trusty side by side 12 gauge, with one barrel loaded with a heavy Magnum load(1 and 1/2 ounce, short magnum typically) of number 4 shot For long-Rising Birds, and the open Barrel loaded with number 6 shot in a more conventional 1 and 1/4 oz load.

I Can Only Imagine hunting for pheasants with a 410.

Darrel,
Thanks for sharing. What state did you grow uo and hunt pheasants in? A .410 would likely not be the optimal shotgun in large open grasslands It was effective for Bill here in the Northeast. That hunt was his first using the .410, he usually hunts with a 20 gauge Silver Pigeon.

I grew up in Oregon, and near the start of the 20th century Chinese ringneck pheasants were introduced to this content as I understand it by people at Oregon State University. By the 1930s birds were well-established, and many were the times my grandfather referred to the old days going out and "shooting a dishpan full of pheasants for dinner".

Yes this was often open grassland hunting where Birds hid along railroad grades and grass hussocks and blackberry Briar bushes. The idea in most places was to make a lot of noise( yelling, etc) and throw rocks and drive the birds and then suddenly stop and wait about 5 minutes. After about 5 minutes the birds would typically rise after their nervousness got the best of them. Many shots were 40 to 45 yards, and the mag load of number 4 shot through the full choke Barrel took the majority of pheasants. Occasionally though a bird would lift off at close range at 25 to 30 yards.

I am not a hunter but I have real problems with people that are haters. Nice photo - the dog looks like it was a fun day for them. I do have to admit, I go out and kill a few paper targets on occasion!
