A lens for portraits...

I am debating on investing in a new lens to do portraits with...

Since I have a limited budget, I have excluded L glass for now... And narrowed my initial choices to the these two choices: The Canon EF 35mm f/2.0 or the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4.

I have, after much consideration and debate, eliminated the 50mm 1.8 from the mix...

Any advice and or opinions? Experience and examples would be helpful as well.
