If you didn't use a pop-up flash on the first one, the pp makes it look as though you did and it makes the lighting unflattering to me. #2 is better but I would try the shot without him touching the deck altogether so you don't have that in the bottom right of the photo pulling you away from the subject. besides that #2 does look good, I would maybe tone down the circular blur. This is just what I would do. I am sure everyone has their own ideas though.
Can you post the original shots? These look way too cooked. Look at the right arm of the young man in the second picture - hes got artifacting all up and down the length of his sleeve.
