A long time coming, My photo assignment pictures

LOL, these certainly aren't my best, but it was the first attempts at B&W with my own development. My professor kept them forever and i just today got them back.
So i thought i would hook up the scanner and ask for some feedback. The things i do know is that most of them are too dark, some need to be focused better ( my dioptic adjustment was off). These pictures were also not cropped as my professor didn't want them to be. The content isn't really my major consern since these were taken specifically for assignments, (the professor wanted use to take pics of anything and just consentrate on printing them.)

Please give it to me straight though, these are my first pics and i wanna improve!

these were tractors i took pics of for a passage of time theme.

I will post some of my more successful color pics when i scan them in.

All things considered, like the ones you mentioned - dark, cropping etc. They look pretty good. It's hard when the instructor says just go shoot something, I used to give myself assignments like shooting all the letters in the alphabet or only items that are red. It really makes you focus to find pictures. Some of the darkness issues can be fixed in the darkroom - with some different printing times and some dodging and burning. Keep at it. Nice stuff.

I will agree that they are a little on the dark side, but do have nice contrast.

I think that the first picture lacks some depth around the water fountain, it feels 2D stuck into the background.

The second has the best overall lighting balance and subject orientation. I must admit the third and fourth don't do much for me. The technic is good but the subject of the picture doesn't hold my attention.

I would agree that a little more contrast and more brightness would really make some of the pictures pop out at yah. I like the look of old tired machinery in black and white.

The third and fourth pictures I like. They both have really attractive shapes. In the third picture, I would like see it taken at a closer distance with less background. Try different vantage points to try and not capture the "May" trailers and bring the viewer's eye to the machine. Maybe experiment with different angles to acheive a sense of depth. Sometimes even a close-up of just one part of the machine with an unusual attractive shape. The fourth picture has good depth. The weathered paint really makes for a nice effect.

Overall nice pictures.... Especially when the professor asked you not to concentrate on content.
