Try this: brightness +19, contrast +9, then sharpen once.

i tried it and for me it blows the column and base out a bit more than i'd like. you like the result?

I tried this, you may like it: image mode - duotone (type - monotone, ink black), sharpen once, mode - rgb, save.

ok, i'm always out there looking in...but i like the original one better... i like the stone all around her..and her sitting under it...but i dont get helplessness from her... i get that maybe goverment is huge, big, forbidding, cold at times, but even though its all around her, she is still human, soft, pliable..and has the spirit to succeed...she is undaunted... she still carries on...and the building is just a building, until the human factor is added....she makes the shot.
all that to say, good job jon mikal..this is really the "balance" pic, dont you think?
