No, I did a high contrast B&W layer atop the color layer and changed the blend mode to Luminosity. This provided a needed delineation of contrast and detail in the sand.

It's not about the process, it's about the final result. And the final result isn't black and white.
It's not that I don't like your work. I just think it's better this way. Not meaning I'm right.
