About to go Nikon DSLR - Canon users rebuttal?

Sure they do, Nikon uses a gold band. Now they don't have the signifying L, but they do band their higher level lenses.

Hmm, it doesn't stand out quite as much... i had noticed the gold band before but the association is not as clear as with Canon's lenses for some reason. But it is there on the recent high end lenses, so i stand corrected.
Ya, black doesn't stand out as much as white either. ;)
Go figure. :D

If you mean the off-white colour of many L lenses, notably the very big ones, it's to keep-down heat.

Nikon does tend to be a little bit more pricey than Canon, on average, but meh. Go with what works for you. (It makes sense from a business perspective; Nikon only does cameras, whereas Canon has a whole bunch of other departments backing each other up. Canon is huge compared to Nikon, so they probably have more leverage to mass-produce on the cheap.)

I am about a week away from taking the DSLR plunge. Ive always shot Nikon and it looks like the D300 is going to be my choice. But something is continuing to nag me in the back of my mind. Im always hearing people say "too bad you werent shooting Canon" or something to that extent. Never "A Nikon would have really helped". So is it just user fandom or is the Canon digital line comparably better?

If you are not sure of what YOU want... don't purchase. Do your research and look at both.

I did the research and went Nikon. Others did the same and chose Canon. This is not something someone can tell you what to do, YOU have to do it on your own. :)

I have held and fondled both lines. The Nikons have always felt more natural in my hands. I think the IS and lens quality issues were my only real concerns. It seems like a comparable Nikkor lens is a bit more $$ vs. an equal Canon too. The body is a drop in the bucket compared to a bag full of good glass.
None of Canons L glass is cheap either. But Nikon does have better built entry level lens bodies. As an example Nikons Nifty-Fifty is solidly built as where the Canon in the same range is not even close. I have dropped my 50 a few times and, it still keeps ticking as, where on another forum one of the Canon users had his roll off the kitchen table and, it fell apart.
With either manufacturer you will get a great quality body as, they are close to each other. With either of them the good glass is expensive. After all this isnt a cheap hobby if you are doing it right.

Cripes, enough with the "do what YOU want" stuff. Im not asking anyone to make up my mind. This is not my first camera (or car, or house, etc.) purchase. Ive done all the research I need. Im asking for some last minute feedback from Canon users. K? :hugs:

Cripes enough with the hand holding questions, K? Be a big boy, there are PLENTY of reviews written by Canon *and* other users already... That is the reality of the situation, if thats not good enough, don't ask. :D

Sheesh... some poeple have trouble typing in "www.google.com" into their browsers!!

HERE... over 21 million answers to your question... have fun reading. "K"?

The solution is simple, you already said you like Nikon and you've shot them for years. Get a freaking Nikon and be done with it. Jesh.

These threads are getting retarded.

Nikons are crap. Get a Canon.

Once I picked up a 10D in a store, I bought it. It felt great. (Though in hindsight, I should have waited 7 months and got a 20D). I didn't really like the feel of any Nikons at the time in the same price range.

Toot-toot eh? Your post count doesnt give you the right to talk smack to me. Not everyone new to this forum is new to the internet so get off my tip. And Im a big enough boy to consult people who utilize their stuff to a fuller extent than I will. I know youre only trying to help. But I have (obviously?) read just about every comparison I could find. Ive been looking for months. Reviews dont give you the option of directly engaging the community in discussion. That was my only intent. ;) Can we get back OT?

I have problems with Nikon's D40 and D60s. But at the D300 level they are awesome.
I concur. I cannot muster an argument against the D300.

You will spend slightly more for Nikon gear than for similar Canon gear, but don't let that slow you down.

I'd say if at all possible to try them out to do so. I did and I went Canon for certain lenses in their lineup, but also because Nikons user interface sucked IMHO. I do not like like all those darn buttons everywhere either. You may like them though.

I've been a Nikon film shooter for years. I have massed up a bunch of Nikon gear over the years.

The digital age Nikons are not very compatable with other lens mounts, even via an adaptor. My M42 lenses will not focus to infinity without the help of an added element on my adaptor. This was a big draw back for me when looking at digital cameras.

If this is not a problem for you, then cool. No biggie... ;)

I went with a Pentax because of the register distance to the center of the lens. My PK-mount, M42-mounts, and yes, even my Nikon glass without an adaptor work very well.

Thsi was just a selling point for me, I know others may be looking for differnt options or performance ratings.

From my understanding, Canon is also very good with other lens mounts, via their chipped adaptors.

Thats an interesting point on the Pentax. Thats the brand I got started on way back. From a K1000 to a SM1 and I loved them. Though once I went to a F100 (then F4) I never looked back.

I keep hearing about camera and lens rentals. Where would I find such a place? I cant say that I have ever looked into it.
