Who doesn't love the Spit? Mk IX at Duxford, last week. My favourite version, if only because my first scale model as a boy was of one.

They used the Merlin engines didn't they? Like two or three different versions of the Merlins as I recall.

nice! there's a museum near me that has a Mk V(c) which they take out and fly from time to time... i'll be looking to get shots of it in the air in a couple of weeks.

I like the color of the belly.
I liked the messerschmitt in grey cammo a little better than the spitfire but they were always getting knotted up together in their hey day anyways, so if you saw 1 you probably saw both.

Yes, that Mark did (later ones used the Griffon). Many iconic allied aircraft used the Merlin, including the P51D, powered by a licence built version. That changed a really good aeroplane into an outstanding one.

Here's a MK1a for comparison, which was sitting right next to the IX when I took the photo. Though this machine is virtually brand new....the wreckage from which it was restored was in a poor state.

Probably! There is, or used to be one in Homer, Alaska (strange place)
