What's new

Advice on a Canon DSLR please :)

its an ok camera. we have about 10 of them at school in our tech room. personally, i think the grip is too small for me.

Also, the Xsi (which i'm getting for $400) comes with the 50 mm 1.4

If you go with this one, let me know how you like the lens... I've been thinking about the 50mm 1.8 for awhile, but may spring for the 1.4.

I have the 1.4. I find it to be worth it if you're looking for build quality and fast, quiet focusing. It's also got an additional 2/3 stops of light extra over the 1.8 which can be valuable on occasion.

Trust me, spring for the 1.4. You will in all likelihood replace a 1.8 anyway, so why spend $450 on a $350 lens? I've said it before and I'll say it again; people who rave about the 1.8 rave because they've never owned a fast prime before. If you have nothing to compare it to, of course it's a prince among men. It's low light AF performance will frustrate you, and it's slow, loud, clunky-clackety AFing will lead you to think it's going to fly apart. Spend $350 and be happy with a higher class of glass. That's my 2¢.

I'd rather use a 50mm f/1.8 as a conversation starting ash tray or paper weight.

Thanks for the tip! Trying to stock up on any glass/lighting I need before the baby comes, just want to make sure I get the right stuff/quality.
