Advice on first 35mm SLR

Im not a Nikon expert, so I can't really give any advice on lenses.
As for flash, buy the nicest unit you can afford. There are advantages to buying one made by the camera company (at least, that's true for Canon. I assume also for Nikon).

Most of the higher-end flash units made by the camera maker will have functions not available in units made by a different company (eg Sunpak, etc).

but now when most people, and most begginers, say SLR, they mean an interchangable lens system like the nikon n75, I just thought the way you put it to youngman was pretty short and not explained well enough, and i bet you 90 percent of the people in here did not know that fact, thank you for bringing it to my attention and to others
