Advice on first DSLR setup

HI,
I'm a new member here, have posted some photo's from my point and shoot digital in the photo section.
I am very new to photography as a passion and or hobby. However it has me very interested. I feel I have very quickly become limite by the point and shoot i have. so i am wanting to get a New digital slr

I've been heavily looking into the Canon 10d's i've done a lot of research and it seems like it would work well now and for a long time as something for me to grow into.

One of my main questions is the safety of buyi9ng one used say on ebay?
i can't really afford a new one at the time and still be able to buy some needed accessories. and i was curious on you're thoughts of getting used digital slr's
I am waiting to sell a guitar amplifier so i can purchase a new camera
