Yeah, I had concluded that I would really enjoy shooting with a D610 (and I'm sure I would have!); BUT it was pointed out to me that the best camera is the one you will actually carry and use and I was really wanting a smaller camera.

After a flirtation with a D7200, it decided that it just wasn't 'smaller enough' and just ordered a D5500 from Adorama. I'm well familiar with the D5300 (actually borrowed and shot one before I decided), and I feel good about this D5500 compromise. I really wanted a wider view than I was getting from "kit" 18-55 lenses, but I think I feel a Tokina 11-16 in my near future...

Thanks to all who counselled me to carefully consider not just my wants, but also my needs before making a final decision.

Mind you, this isn't my last camera, it's just my NEXT camera.

I'll keep you posted on how I do with it.

Yeah, til I bought that 55-300 DX to go with it!

Really soul searched on that one, too. Getting the 70-300 would leave a simpler path to full frame later, and it focuses much faster. In the end, I decided to go with the slower, cheaper, lighter long lens for now. If I regret it- I'll simply sell the 55-300 and go 70-300.

PS- already had a Nikon 18-55 lying around (ver 1). A prime 35 or 50 1.8 is in my future as well!

I shot the 5200 for a while, it was a great camera. I was always very pleased with the image quality. I think you'll be very happy with the 5500.

If I wanted to buy a DSLR, I surely would look at the D5500.
I had the D5100, and despite being an entry level camera it delivered
very good pics. (of course the lens plays a big role in this also)
I think you will enjoy the D5500. Much of fun with it.

Enjoy. Despite what the internet photo blogs seem to often promote, not everyone needs full frame. The newer crop cameras are very nice and capable.

Love the D5500, has a really small body considering its a DSLR, Nikon really made things small on this camera with NO image quality loss.
According to statistics the D5500 actually has better low light performance then the D7200 (but not by much).
I own an FX and DX cameras, my DX is the D5100 which is just a fun little camera, I never tried the D5500 but considering its more powerful and smaller then the (already small) D5100 I am sure you will have tons of fun with it.
A lens I always had around with me when I had only DX camera was Nikon 50mm lens, considering these cameras aint as good in low light as FX the extra light this prime lens bring into the sneosr is important in low light situation so my advice would be get this lens, its also great for general use and portrait.

Just kidding, just kidding, we'll drop the uncle title, and just call you Crazy Peeb. ;-) Don't worry about it, you got a nice,modern camera with a compact body AND that new touch screen system. I watched the early-release of the D5500 on Fro Know Photo, and he used the touch screen and its touch-to-focus system to good effect. The camera also has an exceptionally good APS-C sensor in it, and it can use 99.9999% of all F-mount lenses every made! KEH.com has some fantastic bargains on pre-Ai manual focus lenses.
